Deadlock Soul Urns

Soul Urns are a great way source of souls for your team, but only if you transport the urns to the altar before the enemy team does.

Deadlock Soul Urns

The Deadlock Soul Urn (also known as a Spirit Urn) is an object which spawns on the Deadlock map after 10 minutes have elapsed in-game. Once spawned, both teams will be notified of its appearance.

These Urns can be picked up by any Deadlock character and transported to an altar site where the Urn can be traded in for a large quantity of Souls, a Golden Statue buff, and an Ability Point.

Of course, knowing when to go for the Urn, when to press your lane advantage, and when to surrender the Urns and focus on jungling or pushing objective can prove critical.

When does the Soul Urn spawn?

The Soul Urn spawns after 10 minutes have elapsed in-game, and will respawn every five minutes after the last turn-in. It will spawn on either the left or right-hand side of the map at random, but will always spawn subsequently on the opposing side of the map.

The Urn will spawn mid-air and descend over the course of 30 seconds. Players are unable to jump up to grab the Urn early, and have to wait for the Urn to fully land before it becomes interactable.

Deadlock Soul Urn spawn locations

There are two locations on the map where the Soul Urn can spawn, one in the yellow lane and one in the purple lane.

Once the Urn has been collected, it will need to be transported to the opposing Urn spawn location. The delivery location is dependent on which team (if any) is in the lead. If a team has a massive lead (10% as of the latest Deadlock update) in Souls, the Soul Urn delivery will be more in the opposing team’s territory. The contrary is true, in that a team who is behind will have a delivery location closer to their home base.

This means it is easier for the “losing” team to secure the Urn and turn it in for a reward, effectively turning the Spirit Urn into an underdog mechanic.

Soul Urn reward

Turning in the Soul Urn to the opposing delivery point rewards the one to deliver it with an ability point, and also awards the team with a Golden Statue buff and a large number of Souls. Depending on when the Soul Urn is turned in, the Soul rewarded will vary. The longer the game has been going, the more Souls the Soul Urn will generate for the successful team.

The first instance of the Urn has a value of 4025 Souls as of the ten minute mark. This increases by 230 Souls per minute (as of the October 15, 2024 patch).

Some of the souls rewarded to the team are not directly credited, but instead spawn in the form of Soul orbs, enabling the enemy team to deny souls.

Soul Urn dangers – when should you ignore the Soul Urn?

While carrying the Soul Urn, the player, otherwise known as the Courier, is unable to attack, activate abilities, use the ziplines or teleporters, and will be revealed on the map for the enemy team after 20 seconds. To compensate for this, the Courier receives a slight speed boost.

In order to defend themselves, the Courier can perform a Parry to drop the Urn, thus freeing themselves up to attack other players or defend against incoming ganks.

Going for the Urn by yourself is generally ill-advised unless the enemy team is committed to a distant area of the map due to the overwhelming debuffs the Courier receives for picking up the Urn (silenced and disarmed).

Somewhat similarly, chasing after the Urn when your team is pushing an objective, particularly the enemy’s Patron and Core, can reduce the firepower needed to win the game. When it comes to the end-game, unless your team is dying for more Souls so they can get a specific Deadlock item, you should focus more on lane pressure and jungling rather than securing the Soul Urn.
